Helsinki. |
Since 1994 Matit ja Maijat has been classified to the highest class, the mastership class, in the National Classification for Adult Folk Dance Groups. Matit ja Maijat has participated actively in several folkdance competitions and art happenings where it has been rewarded with several diplomas. Matit ja Maijat has participated actively in Finnish folk dance and folk music festivals. It gives several concerts every year and performances also in dozens of other events. In addition to the representative group, the Matit
ja Maijat ensemble includes a group of junior dancers as well as a
number of groups for children. Youth dancers have been classified to the highest (golden) class in the National Classification for youth Folk Dance Groups.

Matit ja Maijat has been touring abroad 35 times and given performances in several European countries as well as in Turkey, the United States, Kenya and Macau, Canada and China. The group has also performed in several TV broadcasts both in Finland and abroad. Matit ja Maijat has a large and versatile repertoire. Their traditional folk dances vary from the solemn minuets from the western Finland to lively Carelian medleys. New choreographies form an essential part of the repertoire which includes works of several talented Finnish choreographs. Matit ja Maijat has added vivacious Hungarian dances as well as modern dance and various duet and solo choreographies to its repertoire. The artistic leaders of the group are Ms. Salla Korja-Paloniemi and Ms. Milla Korja who have both also contributed to the repertoire of Matit ja Maijat with their new choreographies. |
